The SAPS made good on a promise made earlier in the day on Tuesday by National Commissioner General Khehla Sitole that Maphumulo would be apprehended before the end of the day.

“The suspect in the Babes Wodumo assault case has been arrested and is currently in police custody. He will be processed and taken to court soon,” national police spokesman Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said.

He is expected to make an appearance in the Pinetown Regional Court on Tuesday afternoon.

He is facing assault charges after video footage that allegedly showed him beating long-term partner Bongekile Simelane, more popularly known as Babes Wodumo, was streamed live on Simelane’s Instagram page and later went viral. It remains unclear what sparked the altercation between the couple.
In a surprising twist of events, Maphumulo laid counter assault charges against the singer claiming the widely publicised Instragram video showing him slapping her several times was in fact him defending himself, his lawyer said on Tuesday.

Speaking to eNCA outside the Westville Police Station in Durban where Mampintsha had handed himself over to police custody, lawyer Pat Magwaza said: “He was assaulted so he has opened a case of assault against Bongisile Simelane.

“At this stage from what I’ve heard from him in consultation, it was before the video. He was then defending himself when the video was made.”

He said his client did not “take this well because it looks like a set up”.

Earlier on, Simelane’s parents held a press conference and thanked South Africans for the support they have extended to their daughter and revealed that she was receiving medical treatment.
